INVITING GUESTS

Tips for Helping Your Daughter Choose Her Wedding Stationery

Tips for helping your daughter choose her wedding invitations.
WHEN TO ORDER THE INVITATIONS

— The ideal time to send wedding invitations is 2 months in advance.  This gives guests plenty of time to make travel arrangements. So, it’s good to order your invitations about 4 months in advance to allow time for fixing any errors and getting them ready to mail.

WHERE TO PURCHASE INVITATIONS

We found that the best place to get wedding invitations was Vistaprint.com. They have a lot of designs to choose from, and they always have a deal or some kind of coupon that you can use, usually for 50% off.

Make sure your daughter and fiance are in agreement about the invitation design. Don’t take over, like in My Big Fat Greek Wedding

NARROWING DOWN THE CHOICES

If your daughter has chosen a color scheme for her wedding, you can narrow down the design choices to sorting by that color.  The photo to the right shows some of the designs in Vistaprint when we selected “wedding blue”.

CHOOSING THE WORDING

In Vistaprint, the invitations will usually come with some wording already inserted.  You may use their wording, or choose your own. It’s helpful to look at some other examples.

All wedding invitations should include the following elements:

  • Who’s hosting
  • The request to come to the wedding
  • The names of the bride and groom
  • The date and time
  • The location
  • Reception information
  • Dress code (optional)
  • RSVP link or card

RSVP’S

When I got married, invitations were embossed, folded and had a smaller envelope with an RSVP card enclosed.   Today many invitations are a simple flat card with a website to RSVP to.  If you would like to include an RSVP card, that’s still fine. You could also include a Details card that shares information about lodging options.  Click here to see an example of a set you can edit and print yourself.

If you choose to have your guests RSVP online to your duaghter’s wedding website, that can be set up easily. Then just copy the RSVP link and put it in the invitation.

ORDER EXTRA

When you order the invitations, be sure to order some extra just in case you forgot about some of the guests or change your mind on the guest count. That way you will avoid placing an extra order and paying for extra shipping (which we ended up doing for my second daughter’s wedding!)

ADDRESSING THE ENVELOPES

It’s always nice to hand write the addresses on the envelopes. My daughter had a friend of hers do this for her that had very nice handwriting. Allow them plenty of time to get this done so their hand doesn’t get cramped up trying to do it all in one day!

Be sure to double-check the addresses on the guest lists, as well as the correct spelling of the names before addressing the envelopes.

For the ins and outs of how to address wedding invitations, here is a link to the etiquette rules. We had to bend the rules a little bit because we ordered printed envelopes that had a small space to write the address. So we were a bit less formal in order to fit it into the space.  People didn’t seem to mind.

STAMPS

It’s nice to get some pretty stamps to go on the envelopes. The post office usually has some nice floral stamps or heart stamps that look much nicer than American flags. 🙂

You can also go to the US Postal Service website to order specific wedding stamps, which I just found out about and would have been nice to know a few months before my daughter’s wedding. 🙂

THANK YOU NOTES

It’s also a good idea to order some thank you notes while you are ordering the invitations. You can get some that coordinate with the invitations and that’s always a nice touch. Plus you can have them customized with the new names of the bride and groom. This will also encourage the bride and groom to not procrastinate writing their thank you notes after the wedding.

CEREMONY PROGRAMS

If you choose to use ceremony programs, these can also be ordered at the same time from Vistaprint. We did get programs for my first daughter’s wedding but chose not to use them for my second daughter’s wedding.

OTHER WEDDING PRINTABLES

While you are thinking about things that need printing for the wedding, some other items you might want to consider are in the list below.

  • Save the Dates
  • Place cards
  • Food labels
  • Menu cards
  • Table numbers
  • Guest book sign
  • Welcome sign
  • Wedding schedule sign
